Blood Orange Creamsicle Smoothie
Blood oranges are a favourite spring/summer treat of mine! They are sweet like oranges but have a subtle almost raspberry like aroma and flavor. Most of us are familiar with the nutritional benefits of oranges such as fiber and vitamin C.... but do you know about anthocyanins?
The inner fruit of a blood orange can be pink, red, ruby or purple in color. These beautiful and colorful pigments are provided by compounds called anthocyanidins and anthocyanins.
Cell, animal and human studies have shown that anthocyanidins and anthocyanins:
act as antioxidants - to protect cell health and DNA
support phase II detoxifying enzymes
reduce inflammation
interfere with a number of cancer growth pathways
support apoptosis
Anthocyanidins and anthocyanins are also found in other red to purplish/blue-colored fruit and vegetables such as berries, eggplant, plums, purple cabbage, purple cauliflower and others.
Only 4-5 ingredients/ 2 min prep time
1 blood orange
2 cups coconut milk 1tsp lime juice
1 pinch Himalayan pink salt
(Optional - 1 scoop of collagen or small scoop of protein powder)
